The top one was “Demon Slayer -Kimetsu no Yaiba- The Movie: Mugen Train,” A feature movie sequel to the hit anime movie ” Kimetsu no Yaiba,” based on the manga by Koyoharu Gotouge. Based on a dark fantasy story about a boy, Tanjiro Kamado, whose family was killed by demons, he joins “the demon slayer corps.” He fights fiercely to turn his sister back into a human demon. In the movie version, Tanjiro and his friends, together with one of the highest ranking swordsmen, “Pillar,” Kyojuro Rengoku, a flame pillar, board the “Infinity Train” where many people have gone missing and confront the demons that lurk on the train. The show’s highlights are the gruesome sword fights, the sad tale of man and demon, and the occasional comical scene. Its popularity is in Japan and worldwide, as it was the number one box office hit in the world in 2020.

Reviews and comments

The story is exciting and well told, as it was Japan’s number-one box-office hit. I was impressed by the hero’s success in exterminating demons, the manly spirit of the flame pillar, Kyojuro Rengoku, and many other points to watch. The scene at the end when LiSA’s ‘Flame’ is played is a highlight. (Kazu)

I was shocked at how wonderful it was. The drawings were wonderful and drew me in with such a sense of realism that I thought I was there. The music was beautiful, not only for the “flame” but also the soundtrack; it especially impressed me in the scene where Mr. Rengoku left a message for everyone. (Kiratamu)

The beautiful visuals and the fast-paced storyline make this a work that men and women of all ages can appreciate through to the end without getting bored. It moves at a brisk pace from beginning to end, but it was wonderful that there were clear highlights, such as funny parts, crying parts, and fantastic battle scenes” (Beato)

Second place went to “Your name.” An anime movie directed and written by Makoto Shinkai, now one of the Japanese leading animation directors. The story is about a mysterious phenomenon called “switching” between Tachibana Taki, a high school boy living in Tokyo, and Miyamizu Mitsuha, a high school girl living in a country town. And the events surrounding a comet approaching the earth for the first time in 1200 years. Highlights of the movie include a worldview filled with a sense of fantasy and scale, overwhelming visual beauty and elaborate depictions of landscapes and a love story between two people whose destinies are at the mercy of each other. The stars are voiced by famous Japanese actors Ryunosuke Kamiki and Mone Kamishiraishi. The movie grossed $361 million worldwide and won the Best Screenplay and Best Director awards at the 40th Japan Academy Awards in 2017, the first time for an anime movie.

Review and comments

The view of Makoto Shinkai, which portrays not only Tokyo but also the countryside and other scenery so beautifully, draws you in. While it was a typical setup, the swapping of Taki and Mitsuba is exciting because the time displacement and time leap combine to make the content more complex. The music by Radwimps also added tension and emotion to the content. (Hiro)

Stories in which a man and a woman switch places are rare, but this work is interesting because there is a time gap between the two, rather than just the two switching places. Also, the RADWIMPS song that played while they were trying to avoid the comet accident was a great match. (Mikan)

I was overwhelmed by the beautiful images, realistic music, and the beautiful and cruel depiction of Japanese tradition and nature. There are many stories in which the characters’ souls are swapped, but this swap is approached from a different angle, and the fact that it is not the standard slapstick drama was very appealing. The movie depicts the growth and friendship of a 10-year-old girl, Chihiro Ogino, who wanders into a world where the 8 million gods exist, and humans are not allowed to step in. It held the top spot for nearly 20 years until it was overtaken by the “Blade of Demon’s Destruction: Infinity Train” feature movie. The movie won the Golden Bear Award at the 52nd Berlin International Movie Festival, the first ever for animation, and the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Movie at the 75th Academy Awards. The fantastic and unique characters that appear are captivating.

Reviews and comments

It starts with the scene where the parents turn into pigs, which would be impossible in the real world. From there, it makes you think about the importance of the names, treating people equally, environmental pollution, which has become issues, and much more. It is not only simply fascinating, but the message hidden in the story is profound. (Homimaru)

I first watched the movie in elementary school, and I remember crying in the movie theater. I have seen many Ghibli movies, and I especially love the world and the music. It is a work with many message elements, and you can discover something new every time you see it. (Maru)

The depicted background of the bathhouse inn and the unique positioning of each character make this movie the most memorable of Hayao Miyazaki’s works. There are some funny scenes, such as when Chihiro overeats and is turned into a pig or when Chihiro works at a public bath and has to deal with customers, and you can see glimpses of childishness and novelty in the movie. (Pasu)

More than 30 years after its release, it remains a timeless classic that continues to be supported by many generations.

Reviews and comments

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched it since I was a kid. When I was a child, I thought Totoro was cute, but now that I am an adult, I was moved to tears by Satsuki and Mei’s kindness and the beauty of the scenery and music. (Donguri)

I’ve watched it repeatedly, and I find something new and exciting every time I watch it!
I started to like it more and more when I started watching it thinking Satsuki and Mei were my children. (ad)

Totoro is so cute; I’ve watched it dozens of times since I was a kid. I remember the story well enough to memorize their lines. But I never get tired of watching it over and over again. (Minami)

The best anime movie of all time: No.5 Castle in the Sky

Fifth place went to “Castle in the Sky. A memorable first production by Studio Ghibli, this animated feature movie was written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. The movie was based on a fictional work that Miyazaki conceived during elementary school. The story is about the adventures of Pazu, a boy, and Sheeta, a girl, in Laputa, a legendary castle in the sky. The name “Laputa” comes from the “Kingdom of Laputa” on the flying island in Irish author Jonathan Swift’s “Gulliver’s Travels,” and the movie is set in a fictional world based on Europe during the Industrial Revolution in the late 19th century. The film speedily depicts the thoughts and feelings of a boy pursuing his father’s dream, a girl descended from the royal family of Laputa, a government agency, and a band of pirates, and draws the viewer into a world created with overwhelming visual beauty.

Reviews and comments

I think this is Ghibli’s best “adventure action movie,” with thrilling and exciting scenes and heartwarming ones. The main character, Pazu, is full of a sense of justice, and his willingness to take risks for the sake of Sheeta is lovely. The animation, which is two-dimensional but has depth and a sense of speed, is unique to Ghibli. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of watching this work. (Yuyu)

The flying castle and the child’s journey in the airship stuck with me as a child, and I have watched it over and over since then. Watching it as an adult, I found different discoveries and questions than when I was a child, and as I discussed them passionately with family and friends, I became more and more hooked. (Hukudon)

I watched it for the first time almost 30 years ago, but I still find it a thrilling and exciting adventure movie no matter how many times I watch it. I learned important things from this movie relevant to today’s world, such as Sheeta and Pazu’s compassion for each other and commitment to cherish nature. (Mikan)

The best anime movie of all time: No.6 Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind

The sixth place went to “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind.” An animated feature movie written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki. Based on Hayao Miyazaki’s comic of the same name, the film was produced before the launch of Studio Ghibli. The story is set in a world where scientific civilization has collapsed due to war. Amid a poisonous forest called the “Sea of Decay,” Nausicaä, a young girl in the Valley of the Wind who loves nature and talks with insects, single-handedly saves the future of Earth. The movie won the 1984 Animation Grand Prix, the Japan Animation Awards in the Best Picture category, and numerous other awards in Japan and abroad, raising Miyazaki’s profile as an animation artist. Through the figure of Nausicaä, who is caught up in a war of intrigue, this work makes us think about the conflict and symbiosis between nature and humans and the foolishness of wars.

Reviews and comments

A masterpiece among masterpieces by Hayao Miyazaki. The gentle touch of Hayao Miyazaki’s art style, direction, and dialogues may make you feel a sense of relief, but war is depicted. People cannot stop fighting, and we may be heading toward an end that will lead to our destruction. Will Nausicaä appear to us then… Hayao Miyazaki is amazing. I don’t think there is an anime movie that surpasses Nausicaä” (Piero)

I was drawn into the world from the beginning of the movie. The scene in which Yupa visits a ruined town engulfed in a sea of decay evokes a sense of the end of the century, and the music by Joe Hisaishi adds to the emotional impact. Not only are the characters fascinating, but their clothing, equipment, and gunship designs are excellent. (John Mantaro)

I still haven’t found anything that surpasses this work. Although it is a Ghibli work intended for children, it has a worldview that mixes beauty and desolation, a sense of fear that lingers from beginning to end, a unique ecosystem and bugs, human folly, and the struggle for life in an extreme world depicted in the movie, and many scenes that are pretty gruesome and quite intense. It was shocking even to my childish mind, which did not correctly understand the contents. It’s also fascinating how what I felt changes as I get older. (Nabe)

The best anime movie of all time: No.7 Summer Wars

Seventh place went to “Summer Wars.“ An animated feature movie directed by Mamoru Hosoda, who gained attention for “The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. The story is about a 17-year-old protagonist with prodigious mathematical ability who suddenly joins a large family in a rural area and struggles in both the virtual space on the Internet and the natural world to save the world from a crisis caused by a mysterious artificial intelligence gone out of control. The movie’s highlight is a large family uniting to face big trouble in a virtual world using avatars, and the balance of thrill and excitement is superb. The movie won the Best Feature Movie Award at the 42nd Sitges International Movie Festival of Catalonia and Animation and the 41st Nebula Award in the Media category. You will want to watch this work when you want to feel the summer.

Reviews and comments

Although it was released in 2009, the online worldview is similar to the current Metaverse and still feels new. Also, the characters are a big family from the countryside. The gap between the everyday slapstick and the parallel story adds to the excitement, so I never get tired of watching it repeatedly. (Buchan)

The setting and story are interesting. When the movie was released, I don’t think the online world like “Oz” was very major. I liked the crossover between the online world and the real world. It’s a piece I look at every summer. (Haku)

It is a story about a modern virtual space where events like the ones in the report may happen soon! I feel drawn in by this work. The characters are unique, and I love all of the heroine’s family members. He is a dull protagonist, but he moves the hearts of those around him and makes you want to root for him as he uses his mathematical skills to confront his enemies in virtual space. (Kayo)

In the 93 days since its release, the movie has grossed 18 billion yen at the Japanese domestic box office and attracted more than 13.01 million viewers, making it the biggest blockbuster of 2022.

Reviews and comments

It was the best movie I’ve ever seen with the best elements. The content was easy to watch, even for those who had not watched ONE PIECE before or were planning to watch it in the future, and easy for children to understand. I was delighted with the resilient voice of Ado, a famous singer who sings the theme song and insert songs, which matches the image of Uta. (Yu)

I wanted to watch the movie because it had been talked about so much and was more interesting than I had imagined. Uta-chan was cute, and the movie was like a musical movie. I was so moved at the end that I wanted to watch it again, so I watched it twice. (Nuyu)

The movie is a new experiment in which there are no walloping enemies or adventures, which are the mainstay of ONE PIECE movies, and there is no one who can be clearly described as an enemy. The production fully uses music and other challenging content that newcomers and old fans of ONE PIECE can enjoy. It was a great representation of 2022 (Meat)

Set in medieval Muromachi period, Japan, the story follows Ashitaka, a young man who is cursed to death by a beast that has turned into a tatarigami because of its anger and hatred toward humans and becomes entangled in a bizarre fate. The story is centered on the battle between humans and the things that lurk in the forest, and the characters’ circumstances and values are intertwined in a powerful story that is not a story of good and evil. The beautiful countertenor Yoshikazu Mera, who sings the theme song “Princess Mononoke,” also attracted attention. The catchphrase, “Live. The message of “The world is a harsh place” pierces the hearts of people living in today’s harsh world.

Reviews and comments

I saw this movie when I was a kid, and I still watch it now as an adult, and even when I watch it now, I discover new things about it that I never noticed before. It’s incredible how work can change how you see it from when you are a child to when you are an adult. (Momo)

It is interesting that each time I see the movie, my interpretation deepens, and my imagination expands to include parts of the film that are not depicted in the film. When viewed from the perspective that it is the story of San but is the story of Ashitaka, it is not simply a story of man and nature but a story of human life that is still relevant today. The music is also excellent. (shabon)

I never get tired of seeing it over and over again. It is a work with deep content that considers the relationship between humans and forests and delves into environmental issues, etc. (Priscilla)

Intrigued by the story, Luffy and his friends decided to go to the “Golden Island” where Unan buried his treasure. The movie depicts a time when the Straw Hat gang consisted of only four members, Luffy, Zoro, Nami, and Usop, and offers a great deal of nostalgia.

Reviews and comments

I like it because it is moving, funny, and not cruel, and families of all ages can enjoy it. (Kannamon)

It’s very moving and incredible. Interestingly, there are so many different people with different abilities. (Rei)

When I was in the upper grades of elementary school, the cartoon started, and I was hooked on TV every week. Nearly 20 years later, I am still hooked on TV every week. ONE PIECE is the only anime I can get hooked on from childhood to adulthood. (komo1107)

Reviews and comments

I like this work because I like basketball as a sport and the personalities of the characters, including Hanamichi Sakuragi, are very interesting. I am also fascinated by the funny aspects of the characters. The description of the players during basketball is also fantastic. (Takataka)

The main character, Hanamichi Sakuragi, is overgrowing, and his dialogue with Anzai Sensei is interesting. The scene where Hanamichi’s friend wants to work part-time to save money to go and cheer for Hanamichi makes you think not only about basketball but also individual trust, friends. I think it is moving and a beautiful work. (kumahana)

It’s a comic strip about life itself, not just sports. A frustrated person. Flaws. Each success story can be applied to my daily life. The manga can be inspirational and makes me feel positive about myself. (Yu)

The theme song is “Rouge no Dengon” by Yumi Arai, one of the Japanese leading singer-songwriters, released more than ten years ago. A masterpiece that I never get tired of seeing over and over again.

Reviews and comments

It is an excellent portrayal of a young girl, Kiki, growing up away from her parents, going to a strange city, learning the harshness of society, and experiencing the kindness of the people. (Meowsuke)

I like this movie the best among Ghibli’s work. The detailed drawings make it a movie that you can discover something new every time you watch it and grow together with the story as if you are going on an adventure. There was a romantic element, and I watched it with a growing fantasy, curious about how it would unfold. (Natsuki Nachi)

I’ve seen it many times, both as a child and now as an adult. I think the best thing about Ghibli’s works is that each time you see them, you feel different things and your impression changes, but The Witch’s Delivery Service is the best work that mixes a child’s dream with an adult’s reality” (Shoppi).

The film won the Best Anime movie Award at the 44th Japan Academy Awards and numerous other awards. The one-of-a-kind worldview has captured the hearts of fans and will not let go.

Reviews and comments

The composition of the first 10 minutes of the movie was the best I’ve ever seen. As one would expect from KyoAni, not a single detail of the product destroyed that worldview. And yet we have created such a society in which they exist and live. The boy’s scene is a tearjerker in itself, as are the two in the main story. As an animator, I can feel Violet’s growth all over the place, and it’s great to get a warm feeling from her. (Inarizaki)

The movie has overwhelmingly beautiful images that make you forget that it is an animation, and you can feel the various stories of love. This is the first movie that made me cry within the first 5 minutes—sobs for the last hour. If you see this movie, you will always want to recommend it to someone. I can learn much love through Violet’s life and purify my heart. (Shuwa).

I went to the cinema many times to watch this movie, and it still makes me cry no matter how many times I watch it. Also, if you watch the anime, you will feel Violet’s growth and be moved by the various scenes. (Rei)

One day, a theme park called “20th Century Expo,” which recreates life in the olden days, appears in the town where the main character Shinnosuke Nohara, a five-year-old kindergarten student, lives. Adults are enraptured by this nostalgic world and become lethargic with nostalgia. Shinnosuke, who senses something strange in the scene, learns that it is the “Adult Empire Project” orchestrated by an evil organization and struggles to save the adults. The story is so impressing that it is overwhelmingly popular among fans as the best work of the Crayon Shin-chan series.

Reviews and comments

Many of Crayon Shin-chan’s movies are aimed at adults, but this work is particularly appealing, and adults who have spent the Showa and early Heisei eras have something that come to their minds. Crayon Shin-chan’s usual humor is alive, and it’s a wonderful work that is genuinely moving. (Chirui)

The most moving and exciting of all the Crayon Shin-chan movies. Hiroshi, Misae, and all the other adults have turned back into children at heart, and Shin-chan and the Kasukabe Defense Force fight desperately to regain the future. There are a lot of funny elements, but there are also many scenes that will make you cry. Adults will find this movie enjoyable. (newblend)

In addition to the fun of Crayon Shin-Chan, it is also emotional. I chose this movie because it is funny from both a child’s and an adult’s point of view and is full of highlights, such as a sense of nostalgia, laughter, and smiles. (koko)

Reviews and comments

It is fantastic to see Goku, Vegeta, Piccolo, Krillin, and others fighting to save the earth. I like the world of Dragon Ball. (lovefoot)

Even young children can understand the story. I also admired Sun Wukong’s positive attitude that turned everything into fun. (Nayunago)

Goku’s growth and the bonds between his friends are palpable, and his positive attitude of never giving up, no matter how strong the enemy may be, is invigorating. (OOZORA)

Set in the small European country of the Duchy of Cagliostro, the story revolves around the world-famous thief Lupin III and his friends Daisuke Dimeji and Gomon Ishikawa, who are on a quest for phantom counterfeit money and hidden treasures in the castle. Highlights include a subtle romance with Clarice, a beautiful girl Lupin ends up helping, a speedy and thrilling development, and a dialogue with Inspector Zenigata. Forty years after its release, it remains one of the most famous Japanese animation movies.

Reviews and comments

Hayao Miyazaki directed this movie. The speedy development is exciting to the end. Especially the scene with Count Cagliostro at the end of the movie has a sense of humor amidst the tension, and is funny, like Chaplin’s films. (Conan of Sleep)

It’s hard to believe that more than 40 years old is passed since its release. Hayao Miyazaki’s style and the fictional world of the Duchy of Cagliostro are a perfect match. Even today, the movie can be enjoyed by men and women of all ages without getting tired of it. It is a Japanese masterpiece that I want to pass on to the next generation. (Ririsu)

I have seen this movie at least once a year since its initial release in 1979. Even after all these years, it has not faded away, and each line of dialogue and each scene is vividly recalled. At the same time, it brings back fun family memories and the joy of watching them together. It is forever number one for me. (Kurumi)

The thirteenth and last is “Weather Child.” An animation film directed and written by Makoto Shinkai, who became an animation director and gained worldwide attention with the movie “Your Name”. The story is about a boy, Hodaka Morishima, who runs away from home in Tokyo on a remote island in an era when the weather is out of harmony, and a girl, Hina Amano, who has the mysterious power to make the weather clear just by praying, meet and “choose” their way of life while being tossed around by their destiny. The movie features a beautiful and sad love story between a boy and a girl and the “Shinkai World” spun with beautiful colors and delicate words. The film won Best Anime movie and Best Music at the 43rd Japan Academy Awards.

Reviews and comments

I enjoyed the gap between a story that is quite grand in scale and a small story that is close to the characters’ hearts. (Kenta)

I liked the description of the hero boy trying his best to help the heroine. I was thrilled with the business the heroine conducts using her ability to make the weather sunny. I found the final scene best, where the hero is forced to choose between saving the world and saving the heroine. I hope you will see it. (Mocchi)

Being able to control the weather was novel and interesting. (China)
