No.1 is “Mobile Suit Gundam.” This is the first work in the “Gundam” series, a milestone in Japan’s world-class robot animation. Set in the year 0079 of the Universal Century, it depicts the battles between the Earth Federation and the rebel forces, with Amuro Rei, a young boy who by coincidence becomes a pilot aboard the Federation Forces’ new mobile suit (MS) Gundam, as the main character. The film attracts viewers with its realistic war-themed human drama, fascinating characters including Char Aznable, Amuro’s rival and nicknamed “The Red Comet,” and the one of a kind worldview of robots called MS, a type of weaponry. In fiscal 2021, sales of Gundam-related content and Gundam plastic models exceeded 100 billion yen per year for the first time, and their popularity continues to grow.

Impressions and Reviews

Unlike the robot anime that was being broadcast at the time, I would repeatedly buy plastic models after watching the anime and play with them until the plastic models I made broke, just like the scenes in the anime. As an adult, I have rewatched it many times and once again found it to be the best in terms of storyline, foreshadowing, and the appeal of the characters. I still vividly remember the contents of the first Gundam even now, more than 30 years later. (Kosuke Neko)

This is a masterpiece that can be called a symbol of mecha (robot) anime. I liked the depiction of the main character’s emotional conflicts. (Black Mark)

The complex human relationships of the characters are depicted, it is not just a robot animation, which I think is interesting. Also, the modeling of the robot does not look old-fashioned even after decades have passed, and I think it is the original work that reigns supreme in the world of robot animation. (Emiko)

The theme of war, rather than justice and evil, was heavy, but the depiction of human ugliness and weakness was good and touched my heart. (Melhuta)

This is an anime that holds many memories from my childhood. I think it is amazing that Gundam plastic models are still being sold and sequels are still being released. (Nanashi)

Ranking of the most interesting mecha (robot) anime of all time: No.2 “Neon Genesis Evangelion”

Second place went to “Neon Genesis Evangelion.” Directed by Hideaki Anno and produced by GAINAX, this is one of the Japanese most popular SF animations works. The story takes place 15 years after the Second Impact, where a cataclysm in which half of the world’s population was lost. It depicts the battles between the boys and girls, including the 14-year-old protagonist Shinji Ikari, who becomes the exclusive pilot of the first Evangelion (EVA), a giant human-shaped weapon, and the mysterious enemy, the Angels. The highlight of the work is the “Sekaikei” worldview in which Shinji’s mental world and the real world are synchronized through battles and interactions with those around him, and the fate of the world is determined. A film version that depicts a different ending from that of the TV series and four new film versions reconstructed with new settings were also released.

Reviews and comments

I saw it when I was in junior high school and was just in the middle of puberty, the same generation as Shinji and his friends, so I was really into it. I loved the heroines, Rei and Asuka because they were so attractive. (Cheshi)

It is a memorable work including the music. I think there will be more robot anime in the future, but I don’t think there will be any that will surpass it. I love it that much. (Shiruku3)

When it comes to anime about riding mecha, this is probably the best. When I was in junior high school, I recorded it on video and watched it many times. I loved Kaworu-kun! I know it’s been rebooted a lot, but even if the ending makes no sense, the early Eva is still the best. (KEI)

I think it is a timeless masterpiece. Even though it has been on the air for a long time, I feel that it is a work that still has many fans, with new movies being released even now. I think the charm of this anime is that it contains many scenes that allow the viewer to think deeply about it and the way it is viewed changes depending on the person who watches it. (Kurochan)

The story is heavy in parts, but the distinctive animation cuts and unique characters are fascinating and interesting. The opening and the ending, where the image and singer change each time, are also impressive. (Usapyon)

Ranking of the most interesting mecha (robot) anime of all time: No.3 “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion”

Third place went to “Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion.” This is an original science fiction robot animation produced by Sunrise, the same company that produces the “Mobile Suit Gundam” series. Set in a fictional world where the superpower Holy Britannian Empire controls one-third of the world, it depicts the main character Lelouch Lamperouge, who fights to avenge his mother’s death and win a happy future with his sister. Lelouch, with his black hair and purple eyes, is an anti-hero who carries out his rebellion against the Empire by any means necessary, and although he is shunned by those around him, he remains true to his own sense of justice. Many fans are fascinated by the story, which is not a simple battle between justice and evil. The anime has been produced up to the second season, and three theater versions have been produced.

Reviews and Comments

The story is not a depiction of battles, but a brainy robot anime, with many surprises like those in a mystery novel. The story is also interesting and is an anime that you cannot take your eyes off. It is a great work that makes you want to imitate the main character’s gestures rather than just admire the robot. It is my favorite anime that I have ever seen. (Kenken)

The battles are powerful and amusing, and it is interesting that as the story progresses, the performance of the robots improves, and in the end, it is the skill of the pilots that counts. In addition, Lelouch’s brainstorming is also great. (Nassie)

It’s a great entertainment work that mixes robots, special abilities, a sophomoric sense of humor, revenge, school, and many other essences, but makes good use of all of them. (Lindon)

It is an engrossing work because each character is so attractive. The battle scenes are specifically interesting in that the characters not only fight, but also use their brains. (Nora)

Lelouch’s mind games and Suzaku’s battles always had me on the edge of my seat. I liked the storyline that showed us the anguish of each of the characters. I also enjoyed the many cool mecha (robot) designs. (Jiro)

Ranking of the most interesting mecha (robot) anime of all time: No.4 “Yatterman”

No.4 is “Yatterman,” a national robot gag anime produced by Tatsunoko Productions in 1977. It depicts the struggles between Yatterman, the ally of justice, and Doronbo, a gang of thieves, over the Skull Stone, which is said to indicate the location of the gold, as they travel around the world. The Yatterman is Gan, the son of a toymaker, and Ai, Gan’s girlfriend. In contrast, the Doronbo gang consists of the following three lovable characters: the leader Doronjo, who wears a sexy vintage costume, Boyacky, who is in charge of designing and developing mechanisms, and Tonzura, a former professional wrestler who is responsible for the gang’s monstrous strength. In addition to Yatterman’s dog-shaped robot, Yatter-Wan, various other mecha (robots) appear in the show to keep viewers entertained. The second season of the TV series went on the air and a live-action movie was also published.

Reviews and comments

When it comes to mecha (robot) anime, Yatterman is definitely the best! Doronjo and her companions take on the roles of various people, and the Yattermans defeat them with the Yatter-Wan and mecha in this one-episode complete anime that both children and adults can enjoy. (Na_chan)

Gan-chan was my favorite character when I was a child. I looked forward to seeing what kind of mecha robots would appear in each episode, and I liked how sexy Doronjo was. (Hibari)

I loved the villainous but lovable characters of the Doronbo gang and the clunky robots they made more than the main character, Yatterman. (Ringo-oshi)

I was excited every time I watched the show because of the interesting Yatter Mecha. (Mami)

I loved the scene where the Doronbo gang always lost in the end and got burnt black. I remember laughing at the moment. (Rikinta)

Ranking of the most interesting mecha (robot) anime of all time:No.5 “Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury”

No.5 was “Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch from Mercury.” This is the latest in the Gundam series that continues from “Mobile Suit Gundam,” which is in first place in this ranking. The story takes place in A.S. (Ad Stella) 122, where numerous companies have expanded into space and established a huge economic zone. The story begins when Suletta Mercury, a girl who grew up on the remote planet Mercury transfers to the Asticassia School of Technology, run by the Benerit Group which is the largest company in the mobile suit industry. The first female protagonist in an animated TV series and the fact that the story takes place in a school also attracted a great deal of attention. The series has been highly discussed, and as a “new Gundam,” it has attracted not only new young fans but has also won high praise from existing fans. Currently, the first season has aired, and the second season is scheduled to air in 2023.

Reviews and comments

The work is still on the air, but each episode is very well-written and interesting. There are a lot of foreshadowings for each character’s burden and vengeance, and I’m curious to see what will happen in the future. The story is interesting, of course, but the Gundam as well as the other aircraft have different characteristics, and it is cool that you can create your own favorite aircraft. I can’t take my eyes off it from now on. (Mochi)

I think this work is easy to watch for those who haven’t seen many Gundam series. Unlike previous works, the story takes place in a school, where the main character struggles and overcomes obstacles with her friends. It was also interesting that the main character is a female, which is rare in the Gundam series. (Yu)

I had not seen many Gundam works before, but I was attracted by the cute girl who looked as if she was in a school anime, so I started watching it. Each character has a strong personality, so I think you will find one character that sticks with you. There are many male characters who are burdened with intense emotions, and I enjoy watching them every week while screaming and writhing in my heart. I enjoy the cute pictures and the strong character modeling, but I also enjoy the generally disturbing atmosphere. I was worried that I might not be able to keep up with Gundam if I didn’t have knowledge of previous works, but I enjoyed watching it on its own. (Fuwa)

The Witch from Mercury has a lot of mysteries, and there are a lot of discussion videos on YouTube and other sites, so it’s very appealing that there is room to think about it in your own way after watching these videos in addition to the main anime. (Mokari)

I’ve seen three Gundam works so far, and this is by far the most interesting. The charm of each character is well expressed, and the foreshadowing is well laid out as well, which is really fun to think about. (Kanata)

As in the previous series, the story includes songs, mecha (mainly Valkyrie), and relationships between the main characters, and for the first time in the series, there are two divas and a new setting, such as a school. Three movie versions were also released in succession.

Reviews and comments

I really like the songs that appeared in the middle of the story as well as the opening and ending theme songs. Also, the way Ranka and Sheryl express their love for Alto is tantalizing, yet pleasant and interesting, which makes me support both of them. (Batchi)

Everything in this anime, including the songs, is so cute. It’s an anime that makes you feel like you could be the main character too. You would be overwhelmed by how smooth the actions in battle scenes are. (Nako)

The music is really great as it matches the mechas well. The characters are very cute, cool, and attractive. (Ankoro)

The combination of music and battle scenes is interesting. The songs are particularly catchy. (Hanako)

This is my favorite and the most famous work out of all Macross series. The songs are so good that I sing with my friend when we go to karaoke. Also, I’m quite into character design, which is so cute and attractive. (Yarusenai-Nachichi)

Ranking of the most interesting mecha (robot) anime of all time: No. 6 “Eureka Seven”

Quote: Amazon Prime Video

Year of release: 2005
Director: Tomoki Kyoda
Original Story: Bones
Production Company: Bones
Theme Song: “DAYS” by FLOW
Official Website

No.6 is “Psalms of Planets Eureka seveN, known for “Eureka Seven”. This robot anime is popular not only in Japan but also in some other countries. The setting is a planet covered with a coral-like land called Scab Coral. The story begins when a mysterious and beautiful girl named Eureka appears, wearing the mechanical robot, called Nirvash type ZERO, before the eyes of Renton, a 14-year-old boy who yearns to join the renegade group Gekkostate. The classic love story, in which Renton, a child who could not admit his own faults, grows into a young man who can respect others after meeting Eureka, has been well received as an “anime that makes you cry”, and gained many enthusiastic fans. They produced a sequel, “Eureka Seven: AO,” in 2012 and four films after the anime television series.

Reviews and comments

This anime is for lovers of science fiction. The world’s oldest LFO Nirvash, which is like a symbol of their bond, is the mechanic in this work, but it rides on the waves of a substance called “Scaper” that exists in the atmosphere of this world and flies through the air like a surfing machine. When it comes to supernatural battles, Bones (production company) is the best! Impressively cool drawings and songs in the film. The three latest films are great works that are a reworking of the media mix that is like a reward for Eureka fans who have seen it all. (Haru)

The main character Renton’s worries and struggles are so realistic. The storyline, which makes the audience wonder what will happen to Eureka towards the end of the story, is also excellent. (MAG)

I think this is the most interesting robot anime. Although I had never finished this type of work before, Eureka Seven was the only one that I could watch all the way through and find it interesting. Also, I will never forget the line “Don’t beg for it, earn it. Do it, and you’ll be rewarded.” (Barusan)

The connection between characters becomes deepened through the robots, and the parts that are difficult to express in a robot anime are well drawn, and there are many attractive characters. (Sho)

This anime is interesting because it has a good storyline with so many foreshadowings. (Maron)

The story is a science fiction work that depicts the daily life of Doraemon, a cat-shaped robot from the 22nd-century future, and Nobita Nobi, an elementary school student who is not good at studying or sports. Doraemon comes to Nobita in order to help him grow up and change the history of his descendants, who will be left with a huge debt in the future. He picks up various gadgets from his four-dimensional pocket to help Nobita out. Doraemon, who provides attractive items that everybody wants, such as “Hopter” which allows him to fly, or “Anywhere Door” which allows him to go anywhere, is invincible and thus very popular. Reviews and comments

I think everyone, men and women of all ages, loves this anime. It is a wonderful anime because it has dreams and you can learn about friendship as well. (keikolyn)

Even as an adult, I can’t help watching it because I still find it interesting and moving sometimes. (m)

I have been watching it for a long time. I love it because you can go to many different worlds (from the Ice Age to the future) and it is full of dreams, hopes, and excitement. (Ame)

At the end of the day, I don’t think there is any robot anime that can compare to this one. I chose it because I love the story, the characters, and the laughter and tears. (Risaniko)

It’s an interesting anime with dreams and peace. I thought it is good that we can talk about how we wish we had such tools with everyone. (Chii)

Ranking of the most interesting mecha (robot) anime of all time: No. 9 “Astro Boy”

Coming in at No.9 is “Astro Boy.” This anime is based on the comic of the same title by Osamu Tezuka, who is one of the Japanese world-renowned manga masters. It depicts the great activities of Atom, an android young boy who possesses seven powers including 100,000 horsepower through an atomic fusion system, in a future world in the 21st century. Atom, who was created by Dr. Tenma, the Minister of Science, as a replacement for his dead son, has a sad past that he has been sold off to a robot circus because he never grew up. However, Professor Ochanomizu, the new Minister of Science, restores his human rights and sets him free. After that, he fights against evil with 100,000 horsepower, which captured the hearts of children all over the world. This work is memorable as Japan’s first domestically produced animated television series.

Reviews and comments

I chose this work because I think it is the reason why robot animation has become what it is today. I like the fact that it never gets old even after watching it now. (BOX)

I enjoyed the story of a robot who has a human heart and lives in a world where he has the same rights as humans. I think the fact that Astro fights for humans is the best part of this work. (Mechasara)

I think it’s great that it’s still interesting to watch even now. (ks)

I still have an Astro Boy toy worth tens of thousands of yen, and I chose this work because he is the robot who is the most familiar with humans. (Hidepon)

I chose Astro Boy because it is a work that everyone knows and was Japan’s first mecha (robot) animation. I am also a fan of Osamu Tezuka, but I specifically like Astro Boy as he has humanness and is full of hope. (Warasa)

Ranking of the most interesting mecha (robot) anime of all time: No. 10 “Gurren Lagann”

Quote: Amazon Prime Video

Year of release: 2007
Director: Hiroyuki Imaishi
Original Story: GAINAX
Production Company: GAINAX
Theme Song: “Sorairo Days” by Shoko Nakagawa
Official Website

“Gurren Lagann” comes in at No.10, an original science fiction robot anime produced by GAINAX. The story takes place in the distant future, where humans have dug holes in the ground and built villages, living in fear of occasional earthquakes and falling rocks for hundreds of years. The story follows the adventures of Simon, a young boy living in a subterranean village who discovers that there is an “above ground” world, and escapes to the surface with a small drill he finds while digging a hole, and unfolds with his friends. The story is full of the elements of the classic robot animation, and the highlight of the story is that it is not simply about poetic justice. It has gained immense popularity as a “booming anime” and two film versions have been released.

Reviews and comments

This is a robot anime that is extremely exciting. The vigor and heat are great. (Pandaman)

The storyline around the beginning was shocking and interesting. In the end, it was also great that the scale of the story became so epic that it was hard to imagine from the beginning. (Mimomo)

The story is interesting with many exciting scenes from the beginning to the end. I looked forward to seeing the growth of the main character and the strengthening of the robot every time. (Daichi)

The story is crazy, but it’s very interesting and exciting from beginning to end. At the beginning, the robot was small and the main character was not confident in himself, but by the last episode, both the robot and the main character have grown up more than ever. There are many attractive characters as well, and I think it is popular not only with men but also with women. (Yuyuyu)

The powerful battle images and the passionate words of the characters are touching. It’s a little tacky, but that’s what’s good about it. The story proceeds vigorously and smoothly and I enjoyed the work until the end. The final scene is so large in scale that I couldn’t help but laugh at some parts, and yet I was deeply moved by it at the same time. It is a very interesting work with flashy battle scenes and gag scenes that only the TRIGGER (production company) can produce. (Taka86)

The story is easy to understand, and there are a variety of Mobile Suits such as cool and cute ones, which I think is great. (Seiten)

The characters are especially cool among the Gundam series! (Aisatsu)

I found it interesting that this story wasn’t only about the battles of Gundam, but about the inner conflict of human beings. (Mon)

The theme song is cool and I like the intensity of the battle scenes. (rua)

I can still sing the theme song. It was very interesting to watch the boys and girls try their best. (Nacchi)

The robots are cool and the characters are interesting. (Yotan)

The robots were cool and the robot battles were fun and powerful. (Yopa)

This work is different from other anime in terms of its touch of drawings, which is quite modern. I also found it new and interesting about the story in which boys and girls who can sense lively robots are gathered to activate Aquarion. (Chibiusa)
